My 7th Grade Poetry Experience

In our recent poetry unit, I learned lots of techniques I had not known about before. For example, I had never written a sonnet in my life, however I think I was successful with my final product, “Skyping In Class” in which I used AABB rhyming and actually used iambic pentameter.

One of my greatest challenges in poetry was working with metaphors. I feel that in my extended metaphor poem, “Chattering Leaves” I lost the connection between the leaves and what they were representing. (This poem cannot be found in my poem book). It was hard for me to keep with the theme I had started, I either lost the metaphor or lost what it was supposed to represent.

However, I really liked writing haikus and sonnets. My “Haiku” Haiku was more fun to write than the others because I prefer writing about what I feel rather than the seasons or something that I’m instructed to write about.  Although I highly enjoyed it, I found that I could express myself much better if there was no structure and rhythm or rhyme requirements because I could use my own word choice without worry. Writing sonnets and haikus was a challenge for me because my ability to show my emotions through my word choice was highly limited because of the syllable structure, however I benefited from it a lot and thought it was probably the most fun to write sonnets and haiku, once I got the hang of it!
Enjoy!
