Another Poem by a Published Author-Carl Sandburg

FOG
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on
-Carl Sandburg

I always picture the fog at night.

I chose this poem as my other poem by a published author because I think that although its not very long, so far, of all poems I've read, I get the best image from this one. I think that the figurative language is amazing. The line, "little cat feet" gives me a great description because I can just picture furry paws of a small cat padding silently, and it gives me a great scene in my mind's eye. Another thing about this poem that I think works really well is the fact that its short and sweet. It's not a long poem that spends lots of time describing a scene and filling it with random words to help get the image, and yet, I get a better image than most other poems. Although It gives me a great image, I now realize one of the best parts is that it's MY picture. I mean, it gives me a clear description, but when I think about it I realize that for different people the image it paints could be totally different. It's not deciding what I should be seeing for me, it lets me picture the city how I want it, at night, or during the day time. Cloudy or rainy or sunny or snowing. If I choose to I can see an actual cat, or I can just imagine the fog rolling in and stopping, silently, LIKE a cat, but not actually seeing one, and I think that really helps the poem.
The reason that this poem gives me such a clear view that comes so automatically every time I read it is because of the fact that my neighbors cat will walk on our fence, in "little cat feet" and just sit for long periods at a time, not moving, maybe watching my dog, or squirrels. So when I read the lines, "on silent haunches" or, "little cat feet" I can see that really well, and it gives me a good illustration that I really like. Enjoy!
